Hydrotech Saving Energy on Rinse Water System

Drumfilter HDF2007-2S
In 1997 a Hydrotech Drumfilter model HDF2007-2S was installed at a trout farm in Denmark. The Drumfilter was installed with a standard control box for high level control of a rinse water system flow averaging approximately 350 l/s filtration at 60 microns. Inlet water quality at this location is generally very high, but in the Spring and Fall the levels of suspended solids increase considerably, causing increased downstream loading on the Drumfilter. The demands placed on the rinse water system change accordingly.
To accommodate these changes a frequency converter controlled by the level stick was installed on the rinse water pump. Basic pressure of the rinse water was approximately 3 bar, increasing to 7 - 8 bar for I minute at high level. Rotation of the filter was continuous.
Tests on the new system were run for three months resulting in significant reductions in energy consumption. Eighty five percent of the energy consumed in this type of installation is related to the operation of the rinse water pump. Savings of fifty percent in energy costs with the new system were recorded versus the old continuous running operation. The energy savings alone result in a pay back time of approximately one year for the new control box. Considering reduced wear on the filter cloth even greater savings are realized.
Control Boxes
The Energy Saving Control Box described above is now available from W.M.T. Frequency converters are now standard for all Drumfilter models HDF1600 series and larger and on Discfilter model 2100 series. On these heavier filters it is imperative to start at a slow speed when running intermittently due to dynamic forces. You will have the option of controlling rotation speed manually which may be of benefit in some situations (e.g. Heavily loaded water.) Within certain limits capacity may be increased by increasing the rotation speed.
Hydrotech strives to constantly update and improve the fine quality products we offer to our customers. To provide the highest levels of safety and reliability to our customers throughout the world, Hydrotech now uses the SEW Euro Drive System on all systems of more than 0.25 kW. The SEW Euro Drive System is recognized worldwide as the standard for quality motor products.
